The competition was originally conceived to bring together worldwide puzzle enthusiasts to compete in a friendly and fun environment.

The organization is supported by more than 20 national associations, including:
- Australia
- Brazil
- Canada
- Spain
- Sweden
- Turkey
- United States
The Rise of Speed Puzzle Competitions
In recent years, there has been a rise in speed puzzle competitions, where participants race against the clock to complete a puzzle as quickly as possible. The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship includes a speed puzzle event, where participants must complete a 500-piece puzzle as fast as possible.
The puzzles used in competitions typically range between 500 to 1000 pieces and are selected from quality puzzle manufacturers.
Downside: puzzle competitions have led to some controversy within the puzzle community, with some arguing that the focus on speed takes away from the enjoyment of the puzzle-solving process.
Upside: speed puzzling can be the next step for everyone who likes a puzzle challenge. You must train your mind to remain focused and calm during the competition. Not everyone likes the pressure but in the end, the competition is a place to share tips and strategies, learn new techniques, and make new friends.

Scoring and Timekeeping
The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship score is based on the time taken to complete the puzzle and the number of puzzle pieces. Competitors are also penalized for any incorrect pieces. The timekeeping is done by a team of officials, this ensures that the rules are followed and that the competition runs smoothly.
Other scoring criteria include:
- The best players from each county in the semifinals: only the participants who finish before the time limit will be counted. The rest qualify in order of classification.
- Tie-breaking criteria: the time and number of correct pieces.
- Missing pieces: there is a 10-second penalty for each missing piece (except for manufacturing error).
- Lots of missing pieces: if more than 10 pieces are missing the player is considered void.
- Shared tables: you or your pair can be disqualified when invading the area of other players.

Training Techniques
To prepare for a speed puzzling competition you need a training routine on improving speed and accuracy. One effective technique is to practice with puzzles that have a similar number of pieces and difficulty level as those used in competitions.
The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship used Ravenburger puzzles for all the past competition categories. Except for the final round, all the puzzles used in the competition are Ravensburger past puzzles.
Selecting the right puzzle is also an important part of preparation for a speed puzzling competition. One strategy is to practice with different puzzles to build a range of skills and experience with distinct types of puzzles.
Practice for improving speed and accuracy. One effective strategy is to track practice sessions and work to refine the completion time with each session. Another game plan is to focus on accuracy, by reducing the number of errors made while completing the puzzle. By combining these strategies, puzzlers can improve speed and accuracy, giving them an advantage in competition.
